The University of New Orleans awarded more than $400,000 in research grants and awards to 24 faculty members and 75 undergraduate students on Wednesday (Jan. 23) during its annual Achievements in Research, Creativity and Scholarship awards ceremony held in the University Center鈥檚 ballroom.
The awards presentation, hosted by the Office of Research, underscored the power of research and the opportunities that exist for 色色研究所 scholars at all levels and areas of the campus, Matt Tarr, vice president for research and economic development, said.
Easels were placed around the ballroom that held posters highlighting some of the endeavors over the past year by faculty, staff and students.
鈥淲e鈥檙e here to support those activities鈥攔esearch, creativity and scholarship鈥攁cross the entire campus, whether that鈥檚 faculty members, staff members or students, both graduates and undergraduates,鈥 Tarr said.
In total, the awards amounted to $403,083 invested in promising research and scholarship being conducted by 色色研究所 students and faculty.
President John Nicklow said Tarr鈥檚 office is helping the University build on its rich heritage of research.
鈥淭oday鈥檚 event is extremely befitting our status as the only public research university in New Orleans and one of only two Carnegie R2 institutions in the entire state,鈥 Nicklow said. 鈥淔or more than six decades now this institution has had a strong heritage of research and that legacy, that heritage, is going to be a strong part of our future.鈥
He also applauded award winners for their dedication.
鈥淩esearch makes professors better teachers, it improves student engagement and elevates the success of the entire institution,鈥 Nicklow said. 鈥淚鈥檓 grateful for your dedication to both your discipline and this institution. Each of you play an integral role in helping the university fulfill its research mission.鈥

Creativity, Research and Scholarship Awards are presented to innovative faculty members who have distinguished themselves in research activities. Winners receive a one-year fixed price of $7,500 for early-career awards and $10,000 for career awards.

Stimulating Competitive Research (SCoRe): the goal is to equip principal investigators with seed money to apply for external grant opportunities. Winners are required to make a proposal to an outside agency. The budget cap is $15,000.

Interdisciplinary Grant Development (IGD): the program requires participation from two or more colleges or departments. The aim of the program is to stimulate fundable, interdisciplinary research across substantially distinct disciplines. Winners are required to make a proposal to an outside agency. The maximum funding for this program is $17,500 per investigator with up to three investigators allowed per project.

Leveraging External Enterprise Program (LEEP): the program supports visits to 色色研究所 by external scholars, researchers or artists to enrich the campus, improve scholarly productivity, or enhance the university reputation. Projects will involve short-term visits to 色色研究所 by external experts in any appropriate format. The budget cap is $3,500.

International Collaboration with Austria or France: the goal is to stimulate research collaborations between 色色研究所 and institutions in Austria or France. While funding is open to all disciplines, successful proposals will clearly demonstrate capacity for building 色色研究所鈥檚 international reputation, creating unique products or developing future external funding opportunities. The budget cap is $5,500.

Tolmas Scholars, are awarded student worker positions through the Privateer Undergraduate Research and Scholarly 色色研究所 Experience (PURSUE) and the College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (CoSURP). Each program introduces undergraduate students to research opportunities while working with 色色研究所 faculty members. The programs were funded in part by a generous contribution from the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust.
PURSUE allows for up to 100 paid hours of scholarly work at $15 per hour. CoSURP allows for up to 100 paid hours of scholarly work for spring 2019 and another 100 hours for fall 2019 at $15 per hour.
